The population of São Vicente
Most of the inhabitants on Sao Vicente live in urbanised areas. Despite its relative small size, the island has a population of 80,000, the second-highest of the Cape Verde archipelago. This population has grown in recent years, which shows in the demographics of the island. Two-thirds of the population is younger than 30, and under 10% of is over 60 years old. This skewed division was the result of an exodus of inhabitants from other Cape Verdean islands to Saint Vincent. Tourism is important for Saint Vincent. As a result of the dry climate, agricultural conditions on the island are poor and fishing also is not a large source of income for the inhabitants of Sao Vicente. Almost all inhabitants of Sao Vicente are literate. The average life expectancy on the island is 76 years, which is higher than for instance in Lithuania, Malaysia, Turkey or Hungary.
